No. There is no way to "force" a gift card to be used only on a certain product.

However, there is a workaround that can work for many stores who want this type of gift card:

  • Create a separate gift card product for each product you want to sell gift cards for. Enter the exact price of the product as the one and only denomination on it.
  • Name the gift card product with the name of the product it is good for along with the word "gift card." For example, you could use something like "Widget ABC Gift Card" or "Gift Card Good for Widget ABC."
  • You then sell gift cards as normal, though keep in mind that gift givers may need to advise the recipient what product the item the gift card is "valid" for (a good way to do this is in the personal message field).
  • You can also create a separate gift card product with multiple denominations that are "valid" on any product.
  • Basically, this relies on the fact that many customers will read the instructions that it's only good on a certain product and believe your site will not allow them to use it on anything else. This is further driven home if the value of the gift card is the exact price of a specific product.
  • If you only one product that is the exact price you set for the gift card product, this can reinforce that the gift card is "only" good for a certain product.
  • If you sell more than one product at the same price and want to sell gift cards for each one, you could adjust the price slightly for each one. For example, if you have three products that sell for $24.99, you could keep one at $24.99, change one to $24.89 and another to $24.79.
  • However, it's important to note that the customer could, in theory, use any gift card to buy anything on your site. If the product is less than the value of the gift card, the gift card will retain the balance. If the product is more expensive than the gift card value, the customer will have to pay the difference using another payment method.
  • Keep in mind that even if someone "figures out" the gift card can be used on any product, you will ultimately end up collecting the funds redeemed, so you'll still be making revenue and, assuming the numbers work out, a profit.

Another way to reinforce that a gift card is meant to be used on a specific product is creating custom branded designs that feature an image of the product (you can also include a name or even messaging that says "This gift card is good for Widget ABC" or something similar. Custom designs require a one time design or integration fee.
